Common Depths by Material
Mulch
- New beds:
- 3–4 inches for full coverage and weed suppression.
- Top-dress existing:
- 1–2 inches to freshen color and replenish depth.
- Around trees:
- 3 inches, kept away from trunk.
Topsoil
- New lawn:
- 4–6 inches of topsoil before seeding or sodding.
- Garden beds:
- 8–12 inches for vegetables, 6 inches for flowers.
- Grade fill:
- As needed for drainage and leveling.
Stone & Gravel
- Driveway base:
- 4 inches compacted crushed stone.
- Decorative beds:
- 2–3 inches of river stone or pea gravel.
- Drainage layer:
- 6+ inches below French drains.
